I've been writing this since I got back, and I finally realised that a) I'm never going to get it into any kind of logical chronological order and b) if I didn't stop writing and post it, it would never stop growing. So here's my Camp Sparkle stream of consciousness recap.
I don't know about
pensnest, but after the success of Camp Sparkle 2007, I definitely felt the pressure to make sure that this year's was at least as much fun. We'd made some fairly big changes (moving the venue, switching from a weekend to a week) so there was plenty of potential for things to go wrong. The recce down to Lyndhurst with
pensnest helped, because it gave us a pretty good handle on what was there and what we could do, but it left enough questions unanswered (like, OMG, what if they don't get the AV equipment installed and there isn't time to hire something?) to keep me nervous.
I had this plan whereby I would stock up on sleep before I went. Worked fantastically, right up to the point where in a moment of insanity I wiped all the footage from my external hard disk and then, for reasons I won't bore you with but which are to do with how moronic file copying is under Windows, I had to stay up until 5am copying it all back over again. And then I got right back up again at eight to go shopping! Wheeeeee!
turps33 arrived dead on time, and I was very careful not to give anything away about the Super Sekrit Plan that James had contacted me about. Of course, it turned out later that James had already COMPLETELY GIVEN AWAY THE SECRET PLAN and my l337 ninja conspiracy skills had been wasted. I ask you!
So I got hugs from
turps33 for the first time in a YEAR (which is just wrong, there need to be hugs more often than that). Then we had to fit my stuff, and
turps33's stuff, and my beauty therapy table and box, and a metric ton of food and finally me and
turps33 into the car. Luckily,
archie_gremlin knows how to warp space when it comes to packing, so I left it to him.
The drive down went pretty well, except for a short jam on the M40. Rather disturbingly, we were the first people to arrive, and the house was all dark and quiet. I'm not used to being early! Good thing I had switched my computer on while
archie_gremlin was packing the car and copied down the location of the key :-) We carried in the tons of food and put it all away, and I started trying to deal with the projector and DVD player.
When I heard there was going to be a projector, I said, "Oh, well, there's bound to be some kind of unit attached. They can't just have the projector bolted to the ceiling with wires dangling down!" And I was right. The projector was bolted to a BEAM, with wires dangling down! Wires far, far too short to reach the coffee table below! Awesome! But a cunningly placed cardboard box and a lot of peering at wires later, we were connected. I'm fairly sure I was a bit short with a couple of people who came past and asked if it was working while I was trying to set it up -- dudes, I'm sorry about that. But my biggest fear for the weekend had been that there'd be no appropriate media player, so you cannot imagine how relieved I was to get pictures and sound from laptop and DVD.
The train contingent arrived next, while I was wrestling with the projector, and then the airport people in the minibus. The house was starting to get very full and noisy.
There was a big problem with trailing power leads on the projector (which would definitely have led to disaster without
pensnest's brilliant idea to turn the coffee table round and run the leads under it). I went out with a couple of other people to the supermarket on the off-chance that they might have a longer extension cable than the one in the cottage (they didn't) but on the way back we found
kira_j wandering around looking for the cottage, a *much* better find than a boring old extension cable :-) With her, that got us a full complement of sparkly campers, all there in time for dinner.
Top marks to the new campers, by the way. It must be intimidating, turning up to an event when it seems like everyone else who's there already knows one another and there are in-jokes flying around. But they threw themselves right into the craziness, which was great to see, and it was like everyone had known everyone else there for years. Popslash fandom rulez! I suspect that
msktrnanny's reading of last years Five Words story helped with the ice-breaking. At least then, everyone knew about Brian's Pecker.
Dinner the first night was pies a la Pen -- Shepherd's Pie, Veggie Pie, and Fish Pie, causing confusion to the Americans who had never encountered a fish pie before, and were clearly dubious about the whole concept of putting a layer of mashed potato on some seafood and calling it a pie. But they were very tasty! (The pies, not the Americans.)
People had contributed *massive* amounts of sweets to the weekend. MASSIVE. And not any old sweets, but Twinkies (which are...interesting, in the way that they're both clearly edible and clearly not made from any natural food substances whatsoever) and blow pops, and Reese's Peanut Butter AJ Killers, and Oreos, and Hershey's Kisses, and a ton of other things which I'd only ever read about before, never tasted. And Pixy Stix. Oh, yes. Definitely Pixy Stix.
Early on, we rearranged all the sofas in the living room, and it turned out to be pretty good for watching footage, while the kitchen made an excellent venue for discussions and games. There was also the slumber party room, which probably ought to be renamed the Not Much Slumber At All Party Room. We had a couple of extra TVs, which meant it was possible for people to watch Dancing on Ice on Sunday (I had to do a station run to drop off
saffronra, but made it back in time to see Greg Rusedski eliminated in the skate off).
People had very kindly brought printed fic to read, which is a great idea even though I didn't get round to reading any of it because I was always distracted by something shiny or full of sugar. I was also happy that I'd moved all my saved fanfic to my profile, because I was able to supply a selection of Bassez to
adelate, who was in need of a fix after watching PopOd.
My bed was very comfortable, but the sun shone right into my window when it rose, which meant the randomly placed sleep I got wasn't great quality. Combined with what appeared to be a limitless supply of sugar events got rather hazy :-)
(Did I mention the MASSIVENESS of the sugar supply? Last year we had a trolley, this year we had a huge table plus the top of a dresser, and after three whole days, despite heroic efforts from the assembly, the piles didn't seem to get any smaller.)
James's secret plan had been the delivery of flowers on Saturday. Of course, I managed to miss the flowers arriving during one of my naps, but they were very pretty freesias, and made the kitchen smell lovely.
I wasn't the only one sleeping randomly. On Saturday night I stayed up talking with
msktrnanny and
saba1798, and finally went to bed at...8am, I think. For a couple of hours. I almost never wandered into the kitchen without finding at least someone else still awake. Often several people, giggling maniacally and pouring handfuls of Pixy Stix into their mouths while their eyes spun in different directions (hi,
iconis, hi,
adelate :-). Either that, or people were playing awesome sparkly games of the kind which meant that whenever you walked past someone was waving a card and announcing that JC was pregnant.
I missed some of the discussions, mostly because I was napping or watching footage. (I'm sad I missed the AU one, because after years of staunchly not liking AUs, they've started to sneak up on my a bit, to the point where suddenly I'm writing them. Much like Backstreet.) I made it to the beta-reading panel, though, which was very interesting. Employing
turloughishere as a moderator was an excellent move, and the discussion moved along nicely with lots of people getting to speak. We must remember that for next year.
Oh! I almost forgot the spontaneous creation of the felching panel. The conversation passed from a perfectly innocent discussion about cider (and its non-alcoholic status in the US) via Welsh cider bottle labels, to goat felching.
ephemera_pop and
pensnest are officially to blame. In case you ever need to describe felching to anyone, here is the
ninjetti75-approved explanation: rimming is like felching without the preceding sex act. Clear now? Excellent!
It was a weekend for fabulous fic ideas, but sadly lack of sleep and sugar overdose have eradicated most of them from my mind. Except for the Benny's restaurant AU that
msktrnanny is going to write starring Nsync and all of us...oh, and the one about the Chris/Lynn/Justin mommy-daddy roleplay. Oh, yes. {makes notes}
Something I didn't miss was the internet, which was weird. Partly it was that a large number of the people I talk to on LJ were there anyway. Partly it was that there was, technically, internet access at the local library, so it became a question of not being arsed to use the internet because there was so much fun stuff happening RIGHT THERE in the cottage. And partly it was that the really annoying thing about No Internet is not being able to Google, and that isn't a problem at Camp Sparkle, because for anything really important, there's always something who knows. Specifically,
trumpeterofdoom, who is some kind of superhero with a sparkly encyclopedia wired directly into her brain. ("JM! JM! What are AJ's dogs called?")
(The only time I missed Google was when I caught a bit of the UK/US differences panel, and
ninjetti75 freaked me out by casually mentioning that the age of consent in Illinois is 18...which would wreck the entire premise AND the title for the eternally-WIP JC/Lance/Aaron Challenge '05 cross-dressing story, to the point of having to chuck the whole thing. (Although some people would say that's not necessarily a bad thing.) I spent the whole weekend fretting about it on and off, then checked as soon as I got home and discovered it is 17 after all! Whew!)
I watched a ton of footage, and there seemed to be a lot of BSB footage this year -- Around The World will just never, ever get to be less fun. On the Nsync side, I think I missed Driven and The Reel Nsync, but I've seen them a ton of times anyway. There was Snowed In, and Spring Break, and the Ananda boys-and-moms interview which so beautifully illustrates the Weirdness Of Justin And Lynn. I have to say that, much as my BSB love has grown this year, when we watched PopOd and MSG, I suddenly remembered how much I really do love NSYNC's music, and what amazing voices they have. Sorry, Boys.
We also watched Robbie's Knebworth concert (twice), and the mall shooting spree episode of Cold Case which I'd brought down for
ephemera_pop, even though she'd actually gone to bed at that point. I also kept tripping over little groups of bandom folks watching footage of little boys in eyeliner on their laptops. Splitters!
Quite a lot of footage I only heard and didn't see (probably a good thing with the very foetal!BSB video shoot where it was possible to tell exactly what Nick was doing by how traumatised
msktrnanny sounded) because I was up at the back of the room doing treatments. I did a bunch of manicures and one facial, and thank you to everyone who volunteered to suffer my wonky nail painting. (And apologies to
saba1789 about the whole cuticle nipper incident -- at least the bleeding stopped in the end, right?)
msktrnanny brought me a HUGE bag of nail polishes, many of them of the glittery variety, which was just fabulous. {mwah!}
On Monday afternoon,
msktrnanny and
ephemera_pop and I went for walk around Lyndhurst, and up onto the heathland where we were stalked by ponies, and found a graveyard. (Although I completely failed to visit Alice's grave in the church right by the house.) On the way back, we stopped for a cream tea. Yum.
pensnest's other half came back with her on Monday afternoon, and bravely stayed around for
msktrnanny's reading of the Lave Lamp story. Sadly, I didn't think to leave my Harry + Max DVD behind, because then he could've experienced the full Camp Sparkle hazing initiation ritual.
The thing about Camp Sparkle is that there's always so much going on everywhere, that it's like a dozen completely different cons going on all at the same time. Next year, I'm really going to make an effort to spend some time with everyone, which I told myself I was going to do this year, but I just got swept up in the whole thing, and then, fuck, it was Tuesday and I had to leave.
{sadface}
I had planned to stay all day and drive up in the evening after the rush hour, but driving to the station and back on Monday evening in the dark had convinced me that trying that would result in me becoming a tragic news item on the dangers of driving on no sleep. So I delivered
_ducks to Winchester to meet up with the others who were already there, and said goodbye to everyone. Which...really sucked. I'd been so excited at the idea of a whole week of Camp Sparkle, and although I was leaving for a good reason, it just didn't feel right, driving off and leaving everyone else down there for the next three days. Anyway, I stopped off in Oxford on the way to see a friend, and got home just as it was getting dark.
(I briefly reconnected with Camp Sparkle in the hunt for my coat, which I'd lost. Turned out
archie_gremlin had moved it while I was away. Apologies to everyone who looked for it!)
And thanks so much to everyone for coming along and making it such a fun week. Without all of you, Camp Sparkle is just a really big house and a table full of sugar. A MASSIVE amount of sugar.

But then it occurred to me, they could switch...top/bottom, daddy/infant.
And then clearly the story would be all about Chris's secret angst and shame about his bonnet-and-pacifer fantasy, and how Justin and Lynn work together to make Chris's fantasy come true and show him that incestuous family role-play can be a gift of love!

O.o You don't like AU's? I didn't know that! It must've been before my time. *looks meaningfully at Apocalyps!sync and Cambridge!sync*

I also kept tripping over little groups of bandom folks watching footage of little boys in eyeliner on their laptops. Splitters!
And proud of it!!!!
said goodbye to everyone. Which...really sucked.
It really, really did! Having to say goodbye to people who couldn't spend the whole week was one of the saddest part of this year's Camp Sparkle. I know it's impossible for everyone to be there the whole week but it's still sad!
But wherever it takes place, there *will* be a Camp Sparkle next year!
YEEEEES!!!!!!

Date: 2008-03-16 12:36 pm (UTC)See, by my definitions, the Apopalypse isn't an AU, becase the world they grew up in was the same as the real world, and they had the same lives and careers right up to the point where the plot happens. The Cambridge!sync stories are what I'd call AU, as the characters are leading completely different lives. I like the first kind of story, and mostly I don't like the second. There are a few exceptions, where the characters translate really, really well -- the knitting store AU from a couple of SESAs back, for example.
