pensnest: bright-eyed baby me (Camp Sparkle optional)
[personal profile] pensnest posting in [community profile] campsparkle
[livejournal.com profile] nopseud and I thought it would be fun (and work-lite) to have a supper of traditional British fish and chips on Saturday evening. We'll need to give them a bit of notice, so please let us know what you'd like.

[Poll #1143729]

* I don't know what kinds of pie there may be, the usual suspects are steak, minced beef, chicken, but I make no guarantees. If necessary, specify in comments and give a second option in case what you want isn't available.
** A Cheese Fryit is apparently not unlike a fishcake, only... made of cheese. A veggie option.
*** I hope somebody will try one of these so that I can see what it is. Won't be me, though.

I honestly have no idea... what's the traditional option?

Sounds yummy!

I have no idea what the difference between cod and haddock is though- which one would you recommend for a beginner (ie. is more neutral?)

So cheese fryit = fried cheese, or did misunderstand something?

I've eaten fish and chips once or twice before, but have no idea what was in it.

Decisions, decisions! The cheese and fish are equally tempting...

And we can eat yummy greasy food every day for all I care. :)

Considering some of the things they fry in batter around here, I wouldn't bat an eyelid to see a deep fried battered pie *g*

Ooooh what I'd give for a proper deep fried Mars Bar...

Yes, the UK is ripe with desecration by deep fry. I'm so glad you decided to out do the South.

Ha, I knew cod = turska but I had no idea what haddock was (kolja)... as for the taste, I have no idea which one would be better. I might just put down cod. [g]

They both sound scary, but I know they'll be yummy. So I think I'll take haddock, just to be able to say I've eaten it. :D

They're quite similar -- flakey white fish, served as largeish fillets. Haddock has a slightly denser texture to the flesh, and comes apart in firmer flakes. Personally I prefer it to cod, but as Pen say, that maybe just be a north/south thing. They're both perfectly nice and equally traditional, anyway.

So cheese fryit = fried cheese, or did misunderstand something?

I'm just guessing, but if it's something like a fishcake, then it will be a mixture of cheese and potato shaped into a thickish burger-shape and deep fried. Possibly, having Googled, with onion in it too.

Can we order me a cheese fryit as well? I really want to try one, now :-)

Also, we should definitely order a pea fritter on its own, just to see what it is. It sounds like it ought to be deep fried mushy peas, and that is a concept awesome beyond words.

I can't believe I've been to England three times and never tried fish and chips. For shame! I think I'll just go with the majority, since I have no idea what any of it tastes like. :D

This is not easy. I'm not a fish person (For the most part, I only eat salmon). But I wanna be able to say I've tried fish and chips damnit. So haddock and chips it is. This should be interesting. :)

I don't actually really care if we end up eating cod or haddock - I'm just super excited that we're eating fish and chips at all since I didn't really have the opportunity during any of my past trips to England :D .

I haven't had fish and chips in far too long. Mmmmm, greasy chip shop chips. I love this idea!

Okay, I put down for cod because I'd never heard of haddock and some of the other things weren't fish, so I wasn't sure. Either is fine by me, but a deep-fried cheesy potato patty sounds AWESOME!!! Can we do both? *g*

Since my experience with 'traditional English fish and chips' is varied, I would like to request that my fish and chips not come with anything that may or may not resemble really poorly done baked beans or peas rendered into baby food. Though, if there's some of that yummy flavored mayonaises available as I had with Terri at the chipy, then I say Bring it on!
