Hi All
With our vehicles reduced to a mere ONE, we will need to give some thought to whether we want to do any touring outside the city of Bath. So this is a post to give us all a chance to think about how we are going to entertain ourselves while we are at Camp.
1. Things to Do In Bath that are Obvious
Roman Baths
The modern bathing/spa facilities: Thermae Spa
Costume Museum
Bath tourist bus tour
The Abbey
chalcopyrite's Architectural Tour, ending at No 1 Royal Crescent (see comments)
What else belongs in this category, for the benefit of those who weren't with us last year? I mean, I know I missed a lot of stuff! Comment with suggestions and I will add them in.
2. Things to Do in Bath that are Less Obvious
James Street Brewery Tour - at midday or 6pm, 30 min tour and ale tasting session
https://www.thebathbrewhouse.com/brewery/
Glass blowing with Bath Aqua Glass
Demonstrations Mon - Fri at 11.15am and 2.15pm
Bauble blowing sessions - we could do this early in the week if people are interested
https://www.bathaquaglass.com/activitieslist.html#bbblowing
nb the studio is Very Close to the Excellent Yarn Shop With The Red Setter.
Boat trip
they have a selection of boat trips and boat+walking tours, take a look
eg 80-min boat and walking tour From £16, or lunchtime river trip including pub stop for lunch
or short boat trip to Pulteney Weir
https://riveradventures.co.uk/
Herschel Museum of Astronomy open 1 - 5pm every day
19 New King Street
https://herschelmuseum.org.uk/
Bath on the Beach!
a tropical slice of the Caribbean in Bath, open from 14th June
https://www.bathonthebeach.co.uk/
Live Escape Games!
Something I've been meaning to do for a while at home in Norwich
Take a look at http://bathescape.co.uk/ and if there is enthusiasm we could get a group or two together
Bizarre Bath walking tour
How could I forget this? It's an evening walking tour, about 90 minutes long but apparently we are not walking for all that time. Beast and I did it years ago and it was great fun.
http://bizarrebath.co.uk/
Bath Soft Cheese Company
It’s a farm and I think you can watch the cows and cheese getting made and also eat cheese
https://parkfarm.co.uk/
iconis has suggested:
Spider-Man: Far From Home
and going to see the Apollo 11 documentary on the 20th, which is the 50th anniversary of the moon landing!
Has anyone discovered anything else that you'd like to share?
3. Afternoon Tea
I assume we all want to keep up our usual tradition, yes?
In that case, can some brave soul(s) volunteer to scout out a nice place where we can all go for our Afternoon Tea?
Saba has this sorted! We just need to figure out which day to go.
I think semi-traditionally we've done Afternoon Tea on Thursday, which means that supper can be leftovers or takeaway, depending on who has capacity for what.
That does leave out both Chalcopyrite and Ephemera, who're leaving a bit early - so, any advance on Thursday? nb I have just booked some bauble blowing places for Monday, which may make that day impractical.
4. Do we want to go beyond Bath?
There are buses to Bristol which only take about an hour, and Bristol has much to offer. I personally recommend the 'We The Curious' set-up by the harbourside, which is a fun, interactive science museum. But the place has a lot of history and much to do.
https://visitbristol.co.uk/things-to-do/attractions
If we want to visit a stately home, we could look into hiring a minibus for a day or two (or a car, depending on how many people would want to go on the trip). We'd share the cost of the hired vehicle between everyone going on the trip.
These two look good:
Stourhead - Palladian house and world-famous landscape garden
Garden open from 9am, house from 11am-1630
Adult £17.50 plus £4 car parking
https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/stourhead
Tyntesfield Victorian Gothic house with excellent gardens
Garden from 10 am, house from 11am
Adult £16.50
https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/tyntesfield
My own inclination is to say, we can do so much in Bath itself that we can survive Camp for a year without a big Outing. However, I'm perfectly happy to drive somewhere if that's the general consensus!
Have a think, and a chat in comments.

Date: 2019-07-08 07:31 pm (UTC)No. 1 Royal Crescent is a museum which has been decorated and furnished just as it might have been during the period 1776-1796. The rooms feature historic furniture, pictures and objects that reveal what life was like for Bath’s fashionable residents – both upstairs and downstairs. The museum is a charity.

And the Bath Soft Cheese Company sounds awesome as well. It’s a farm and I think you can watch the cows and cheese getting made and also eat cheese (not a Fleur adventure, sadly).

Boat tour, glass blowing, Herschel museum, beach and escape games all sounds good.
I think I would actually be okay without visiting a stately home this time.
Also, I can totally research afternoon tea options!! I love doing stuff like that.
And let me know if you need any other support to make up for A’s absence, I’d be happy to help out.

Date: 2019-07-09 06:31 pm (UTC)RC #1 does not actually have a tea room, there is a afternoon tea option at RC Hotel though - pretty fancy and pricey tho.
I do have a list of options and I would be happy to look into booking a table/ask about gluten-free options/etc once we figure out which day to go with. Might be easier to get a table during the week?? Shall I make a post to ask people about interest/day preferences/dietary restrictions?

Date: 2019-07-10 02:05 pm (UTC)Should we just pick a day for AT (Tuesday, Wednesday?) and then I can make a post to ask ppl who wants to come and about dietary restrictions and then make reservations.

Date: 2019-07-11 09:14 am (UTC)It would mean that neither Chalcopyrite nor Ephemera would be able to do Afternoon Tea with us, though. I think Monday is the only day that would include everyone, but at the moment I'm just about to call the glass blowing people to see if I can get spaces on Monday for that.

Date: 2019-07-08 07:33 pm (UTC)I would also be happy to do a Brief Look at Bath Architecture/How Bath Looks Like Bath walkabout -- which would involve a good bit of walking in the centre, by nature, could take in that odd little museum set up in the Countess' Non-Conformist chapel, or behind it, but could be a fun afternoon. Punctuated by tea, of course! If interest, will plan route and do research.

Date: 2019-07-08 07:41 pm (UTC)All the things in Bath sound interesting, *except* I think the escape room for me. I will meet you outside. Bristol would also be a fun day trip, and I agree with Saba: I would not be too woebegone if we didn't do a stately home, fabulous as they are.
1 Royal Crescent would also be brilliant, and would fold nicely into that architecture whatsit I could put together -- if we end there, people who don't feel up to walking the whole thing could meet everyone there for tour and tea (I think they have a tea room?)

Date: 2019-07-08 07:34 pm (UTC)I wanted to visit the Herschel Museum last year, but there was too much to do, so I had planned that for this year anyway. I had also thought about visiting the museum of Georgian life at No. 1 Royal Crescent last year, so that is also an option! (https://visitbath.co.uk/listings/single/the-royal-crescent/)
I'd also like to visit the modern spa again, so if anyone else wants to go as well… :D
I never mind a stately home, but I doubt we'd get bored in Bath! (Bristol would be an option of course!)

Date: 2019-07-10 10:20 pm (UTC)I'm v. interested in bauble breathing, if that can be a Monday thing?
I would assume that people wanting to modern Spa will be doing it on a weekday, when the deals are on? That probably counts me out, 'cos I'm on such a short Camp this trip, I'd prioritize things I can more actively do *with* people (like glass blowing!)
Anyone else fancy a boat cruise with lunch on Saturday?
