Camp Sparkle 2008

Date: Friday February 29th to Friday March 7th 2008.
Place: The Old Stables at Lyndhurst in the New Forest.
Cost for accommodation:
- Staying Fri/Sat/Sun nights PLUS any of the following nights up to the full week will cost 87 UKP.
- Staying Fri/Sat/Sun nights ONLY will cost 74 UKP.
- Staying Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs nights ONLY will cost 56 UKP.
Cost for food: 20 UKP (covers food for Fri-Sun only).
Registration deposit: 40 UKP.

ETA:The exact dates you'll be staying for can be changed later if necessary. We're asking for dates now so that we can assess a) how many people fall into which of the price bands, b) when minibus trips are likely to be needed, and c) catering needs. Please, book early and change, rather than delay.


How to register

- Send an e-mail to campsparkle@nsa.slashcity.org (which is where all e-mail about the con should go).

- I'll then e-mail you a registration form, plus various options for how to get the deposit money to me.

- Once your registration has arrived, I'll add your name to the table on this filtered post, and put you on the filter for it. When your deposit has been paid into the Camp Sparkle account, I'll note that on the table, and likewise when the final payment happens closer to February. So you'll be able to check at a glance that you're registered, and whether or not your money has made it here safely.

The cottage we're renting will sleep up to 28 people. At the moment we aren't expecting more people than we can accommodate, but if that happens, then registrations will be made on a first-come first-served basis.


Refunds

a) Up to the 29th January 2008, registrations can be cancelled without penalty and the deposit will be returned.
b) After the 29th January 2008, cancelled registrations will lose the deposit.
c) Very late cancellations, after the 22nd February 2008, will lose the whole payment.

Exception to b) and c) -- if the con is fully booked, and there are people waiting for places, then provided that a replacement can be found for you, your payment(s) will be refunded.

I'm so excited! But I have a question:

What if I want to register but don't know if I spend only the weekend or the whole time yet? Because I'm pretty sure that I'll have time for the weekend (I'll make time if I don't), but if my thesis doesn't go as planned, I'd feel very guilty for being away for a whole week. Not to mention my parents would rip my head off.

You can change your mind later, up until the final payments are due. Possibly even later than that, depending on how late in the day the cottage owners will let us alter the number of people paying different tarrifs.

Question about the registration deposit... is it alright if I pay it after New Year's (as it's when I'm getting monies...what better use for student loans)? I guess I'm asking if I can send the registration form in advance and the deposit then?

Not as far as I know, I'm afraid. There was one sparkly get-together in Orlando, in summer of 2006, but I think it was a one-off event. At least, I haven't heard about anyone organising another.

Of course, you could always do what pensnest and I did, and be the organisers!

sparklecon is the American version. We went to Disneyland for a long weekend last October, sadly I don't know if there'll be another soon. But, as nopseud said, feel free to organise one, I'm sure there would be loads of people wanting to go (myself included!)

The latest would be a month before, the 29th of January, when we have to pay the balance of the rental (which is calculated on a per-head basis). Even after that, we might still be able to arrange it, depending on how flexible the cottage owners are willing to be about us changing the numbers.

Um. If a girl were to check airfare for such a thing, what airport would she need to put in the Travelocity page?

The best airports to check are Heathrow, Gatwick, or Standsted.

Heathrow and Gatwick are the main London airports, and closest to Camp Sparkle if you then travel on by train or coach.

Stansted is further away. However, if you can get a flight to Stansted landing in the morning/early afternoon of Friday 29th, and you can leave from there on Friday the 7th, then you can just catch the minibus we'll be running to and from the house.

(It's possible that if there are a few people arriving/departing at Heathrow on those same days, we might detour the minibus for them as Heathrow isn't too far off the route between Camp Sparkle and Stansted. However, we're only guaranteeing there will be a minibus from/to Stansted itself.)

Well, I can't do it this year ($800, give or take), 'specially since I sort of already promised the LA folks I'd be making an extended road trip down there, and I stood them up last year to do my hermitage in British Columbia. But I have a general time frame and a figure to save for, so maybe next year, hoping it still happens next year? (Puts it in the budget.)

Question, when sill the minibus leave Stansted on the 29th? Cause most likely I won't be able to get there until 6pm or 7:30 pm. I can try and juggle flights and cities, but it'll be a lot more expencive. Am looking at options though.
